There is something that has been bugging the hell out of me the last couple of days; yes it has to do with Miley, it is about the pictures but not completely either. Since the images appeared there has been one (gossip) story that’s being recycled and recycled over and over again now. It started with one story saying that Disney was lining up Selena Gomez to replace Miley Cyrus; to make her the next big thing.
The original story says that a source said that Disney executive said this; I already have two problems with that. The first one is that this source is quite easy to quote; there have been millions of stories that came from source. Must really be a person that is close to everyone in Hollywood. Well of course not, a source is no good unless there’s a name connected to it. Anyone can make up a story and quote a source as the origin of the story. The second problem is that it doesn’t name the Disney executive, who says that this Disney executive is even involved in the Disney Channel?
I am not going to say anything about whether Miley or Selena is more talented here, I’m just going to state facts. Even though I’ve written in the past that Disney is trying to make Selena into a star there is one main thing that’s forgotten. There’s more to someone making a star than putting them in a lot of TV shows and movies.
When Hannah Montana hit TV it was an overnight hit; when Wizards of Waverly Place came on TV it did alright but wasn’t as big as Hannah Montana. So it just seems that Hannah Montana is more attractive to people than Wizards of Waverly Place. If the roles had been reversed; so Miley being in Wizards of Waverly Place and Selena being in Hannah Montana (yes I know she guest stars but I mean if she had been the star) might have ended up in Selena being the big star. Thing is, you just don’t know. Sometimes a show just works with certain people and in other cases it doesn’t.
Selena already can’t become the overnight sensation Miley continues to be; for one Selena is actually older than Miley and she’s been around a bit now already. Again that doesn’t mean that Selena won’t have a big career ahead of her, it’s something only time will tell.
Putting someone in the right spot to become a star is one thing; it just isn’t a guarantee for overnight success. Other companies try it as well, New Line Cinema tried making Dakota Blue Richards a big star with the Golden Compass. As of yet that hasn’t worked, mainly due to the movie being a flop. Doesn’t mean she won’t be a star in the long run of course but not in the way that New Line hoped it to be.
Whether someone succeeds and becomes a star isn’t just up to a big company like Disney or New Line. In the end it’s up to the audience, they are the ones who decide whether someone is a star or not. A company can put someone in the right position to become a star; in the end it’s up to themselves if they will be a star.
But now back to Selena and Miley; Disney is a multi-billion Dollar company. A thing companies that big don’t do is stare themselves blind on one thing. So of course Disney wants more stars than just Miley, they want both Miley and Selena to do well; of course they already have more than one but Miley just happens to be the biggest one right now. So they would want Selena to do well but Miley just makes them too much money to drop her. That’s something that most certainly will not happen unless Miley did something so unthinkable that she would ruin her career forever.
If Selena had been as big as Miley is right now we would have seen scandals as well. I’m not saying that Selena would have posed topless but there would be something the media would be making a scandal out of. Right now the general media simply doesn’t care enough about Selena to tear her down. It’s just something that comes with fame; the gossip media likes to find the bad in people. So it doesn’t matter who Disney would line up there would always be a scandal and if there isn’t one would be created.
So I just have one thing to say really; let Miley have her career and let Selena have her career. Who the real star of the two is, is something the audience will decide. It would help if some of the gossip media would just think for a second before making up nonsensical stories. Though they probably do but know that people will fall for it.
