Review: iCarly

icarly-album-coverNickelodeon released the soundtrack for iCarly Music From and Inspired by the Hit TV Show. It includes a massive 35 tracks but don’t be fooled , half of those are just short clips of the cast talking about the songs on the album. I somewhat expected Jennette McCurdy to be on one of the tracks, guess not every single actress is being pushed into singing after all.

The rest are songs but only five of those include the star of the show Miranda Cosgrove even though the cover would suggest a bigger involvement. I’ll be focusing on her contributions seeing most of the other songs are by better known bands and are just stuck on there to fill the tracklist.

Miranda’s first track is the themesong to the show Leave It All To Me which she does together with Drake Bell. I somewhat liked the themesong for the show but stretched to two and a half minutes it just sucks to be honest; it just feels like it was never intended as a full song.

Don’t worry though, I’m not going to be all negative. Miranda’s second track on the album is Stay My Baby which is a very clearly just a random song they picked and it starts that way, just plain. But 45 seconds in it all of a sudden picks up, it’s still not anything special but very enjoyable.

Miranda’s third track is About You Now which is a Sugababes cover, as I’ve mentioned before I’m not really fond of covers but I know it happens quite a lot. New covers I understand even less, why cover a song that itself hasn’t even been out very long? It’s not actually a bad song though, with a bit of a rocky pop sound to it. I would even argue that that I like Miranda’s version better than the original, it’s just a bit faster paced. Just the end with voice morphing was a bit superfluous.

Headphones On is the next Miranda track, which is a song I don’t get. I would argue it’s a bit of a rock song with pop lyrics, I’m not sure how to describe it. I just don’t think it’s a song that fully fits Miranda. So not really a good one, goes in one ear, out the other. Miranda’s last song is actually a remix of the Leave It All To Me theme song, I enjoy a good remix once in a while. Problem just is that this isn’t a good remix.

As for the non-Miranda songs on the album, they’re not bad songs but all heard before so I don’t really see a point in reviewing them here. I’m also aware of the fact that Miranda didn’t write any of the songs, so she’s not a musician in my book yet. I would also have to hear for a live recording to see whether she can really sing or not but for now I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt, she actually doesn’t have a bad singing voice.

The dialogue inbetween just seems too recorded, you can hear it was done in a studio. Which makes it a bit fabricated, if it had sounded differently it would have been a nice addition now it just failed a bit in that. So final conclusion? Not as bad as I expected, I had some reservations about Miranda’s singing ability but for now she has proved me wrong. Also taking the target audience into account I’m actually giving this three out of five points. Despite all of that I don’t think it will do very well, TV soundtracks never do well on the Billboard Charts, only two ever made it to number one and both of those were for Hannah Montana.

P.S. The first Billboard ranking of the album will be number 30, with roughly 20.000 copies sold. I bet Nickelodeon expected it to do better than that.
