Review: Wizards of Waverly Place

wizards of waverly place soundtrackThis week the Wizards of Waverly Place soundtrack came out, even though Selena Gomez only has three songs on it (plus the theme song) it’s mostly about her. She has a record deal herself after all. I still have my doubts about that though, seeing she once said she wanted it to be a band effort. She didn’t want to do it alone. So very logically she finished recording the album before meeting her band. So now to the album, this is a soundtrack so we have to keep in mind that the music should match the show.

It’s quite easy to tell how they arranged this soundtrack, they just tried to find every song with the word “magic” in it, record some of them as a cover and then release it as a soundtrack. In fact there are eight covers on the album. The only reason to record a cover is when you think you can do a better job of it. Are the songs better than the originals? No they are not. Not that they’re all bad covers, they just aren’t really noteworthy. Just mediocre covers by an array of Disney stars like Mitchel Musso, Raven Symone and Aly and AJ.

So are the original songs on the album anything noteworthy? Sadly not really, sure Selena doesn’t seem to be a bad singer and you can at least hear it’s Selena. So she isn’t another voice that just sounds the same as the previous one. Disappear and Magical are just nothing special. You would think that they’d make the lyrics of those songs match the show, they do not. While they are magic related they are also about relationships, does the character Alex Russo ever get into a deep relationship on the show? No she does not so why record songs like that? Just doesn’t make sense.

That can be said for pretty much the entire soundtrack, the only real theme throughout the track list is the word magic. Things is that even though magic is an important factor on Wizards of Waverly Place it doesn’t mean every song about magic applies to it. A track list shouldn’t be made using a google search. Even though it’s mostly meant for kids it just feels wrong to make a soundtrack like this. I sure hope that Selena does a better job of her solo material.

So what rating to give the soundtrack? Music wise it isn’t actually that bad the problem is that it’s just a random selection of songs. The show has been on the air for almost two years, they could have put more effort into it than this. Seeing it also has to be rated compared to other CD’s review on this site there is no choice but to give it a low score of one out of five. There just isn’t a point to it.
