So there are a couple of things that seem to have come from Miley Cyrus releasing a new song and music video last week. While a lot of them are expected it doesn’t make them any more logical. First to point out that people really don’t have to like the song or video, if they don’t like it, it’s fine with me. What just bugs me is the reasons some people list, if you’re going to list reasons at least make sure that they make sense.
One thing I’m getting tired of is all the comparisons, the song is like Britney Spears, the music video is like Britney Spears or Lady Gaga, etc. People might be calling Britney the queen of pop but I never saw it that way, thing is that Britney didn’t invent pop music. That a song might remind someone of a certain artist sure, that can happen. It’s just a pop song though, to me it doesn’t seem like a rip off of anyone. Same for the music video, Britney and Gaga didn’t invent the music video. That has been a trend anyway, most recently with Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga, for some reason right now people always need to find who something was stolen from. Well not everything is stolen.
Though on the subject of Britney Spears, there is a lot of talk about how Miley dresses too inappropriately in the music video. That she’s trying to grow up too fast. The people saying that, have they ever paid attention to Miley? I personally think that there is more skin showing in the Party in the USA video. She’s a bird in the music video, you rarely see a bird wearing pants. The thing however is that people were saying the exact same thing when Britney came into the public eye. So it’s really nothing new and there have been a lot of entertainers (also young ones) who dressed in a similar skin showing style. Just because it’s Miley people care about it again.
Reading articles and comments around the internet also makes you encounter something quite often, the “where are her parents?” statement. Well her mother was right on set for people who wanted to know. So it was with parental approval, what her mother’s reasons are for allowing it is no one’s business really. It’s a bit convenient and easy to judge a parent when they don’t even know that parent. If the people in question are parents themselves I have to wonder what other people think of their parenting.
This perfect Disney image is something I never got anyway, seems to me like Miley always made statements in the media that she’s not like that. When it’s Disney people just assume the image, the all nice and completely harmless shows and stars for those shows. So when they start showing a little leg and cleavage it’s some sort of drama. People the same age on another network tend to get a different treatment. This however seems to be something that is branded into the general public and it’s not something that will be gone anytime soon. Just seems a little unfair really that people like Miley are being judged as a Disney star rather than their own person. Especially seeing she’s someone who never really fit the Disney image. The video was made under Hollywood Records which is part of Disney, so it’s not like Disney intervened and tried to stop the video.
The whole Miley sexualizing herself thing is not really there and nothing new really. She said in an interview that the video is sexy and that is nothing shocking, a lot of music videos are sexy. Sure there are moments when I see a picture of Miley or some other young celebrity and think woah for a moment. Then I go into town and see fourteen year old girls displaying their thongs, then the realization that this is just normal these days. Is it a good thing? Well, it doesn’t really bother me if other people have issues with it that’s their problem. Blaming Miley or someone else for it doesn’t get them anywhere, if anything they’re more trend followers than trendsetters in that. If they have something against it they would have to change all of society.
Looking at it from a marketing point of view, they say sex sells. Well of course it does so it’s only logical that at one point people are going to dress differently. Doesn’t mean that they are selling sex, that’s more of a side effect in most cases I think. Though sure, in a music video like Can’t Be Tamed they’ll put some sexy stuff in there but it’s not like it’s a crime. As mentioned, it’s been going on for years with all sorts of people. Then there is also this thing, if the video for Can’t Be Tamed had been very tame, friendly and all nice. People would have mocked her just as much for making a video that doesn’t fit the song. Most likely people would have accused her of pretending someone she isn’t. People will always look for trouble really, thing is that with this video there has been some media attention. With another video that most likely wouldn’t have happened.
Anyway I’m rambling now so it’s time to stop. Also think that this is the last Miley blog for a while, bit too many of those lately. Next week will see another one, been sitting on something I wanted to write for a while now.
P.S. I actually do like the music video.
