So here we are with a review for Miley Cyrus’ third album Can’t be Tamed, or is it her seventh? I’ve given op on counting those things, seeing some are under Hannah Montana and some ar not. Fact is that she recorded seven full albums and an E.P. And yes, she’s still only seventeen. Anyway, to get any confusion out of the way, this album is pop. People who were expecting rock or anything like that were misinformed. People that say she’s a hypocrite because she says she doesn’t listen to pop music, so what? She also said that she enjoys performing pop music, so get over it.
So with today’s pop music we get a lot of crap, lets face it, there is nothing behind those songs but a beat, lyrically they mean nothing. Miley however writes her own songs (for the most part) so there actually these might be pop songs but there is actually a story to them. I’m not going to over analyze them seeing people will make up their own stories about it. People who think that one song is about boy A and not boy B really need to get over themselves, it’s an album that she made for herself and not to satisfy some people’s fantasies. Anyway now to the real work, the songs. Well, first let me mention that the song actually has a play time of over 44 minutes, it’s been long since that happened, lately it’s only been 30 minutes or so on albums.
So the songs, I would say that there is a clear style to them, it’s not like it’s an album which is just thrown together. Yes the songs differ in pace and beat, it however does feel balanced. So what are the good songs? I’d say that the stars of the album are songs like Two More Lonely People, which is just simple classic pop. My Heart Beats for Love are just simple songs but very pretty, Take Me Along is just a good pop song in my eyes. However the main star of the album for me is Robot, a good song with a good beat and lyrics that pretty much tell the whole story about Miley right now.
With Robot she makes clear that she won’t tell anyone who she’s supposed to be. Most recently it probably reflects best on the way she dresses, in interviews she’s clearly stated that she feels most comfortable in the kind of thing she wears right now. Do I always like it? No, it however does tell me that she’s being honest and that goes a long way with me. It of course can reflect on so many more things, also with her career choices right now, she really isn’t just another Disney star.
With any album however there are also negative things (“perfect” albums are rare). So what are the worst songs on the album? While I sort of like it, I’d say that the single Can’t be Tamed is actually one of the weaker points on the album. Together with Forgiveness and Love, it’s a song that does seem a little bit out of place on the album. However the low point for me is Liberty Walk, it’s just….. I don’t know what it is. It’s not even Miley rapping that bothers me, the song just doesn’t work. The lyrics are good and strong but the music is just in one word; messy.
There is another song on there which is a strange beast; Permanent December. It has everything in it that makes you hate a song, a music track that’s all over the place, a white girl rapping, way too much autotune and voice morphing, a generic beat and a part with a disco beat where you have no idea where it comes from. I love it, don’t ask me why, I’m considering counseling but I just like it.
So now there is one negative thing I have to say about the album in general, honestly, if you have a talented singer-songwriter like Miley, why do her producers screw her over with cheap music tracks and autotune? While autotune can be used in moderation but sometimes it’s just too much. Though one of the production teams didn’t really hide that they were involved with the two commercials they have on the album.
The strong points on the album however prevail for me, it’s just a good mix of pop music, no way around it, it’s also more grown up music than her previous album. What will Miley come up with next musically? We’ll have to see after her music break, however long it may take. While I personally hoped for something better, she still manages to get a four out of five score.
