Lately there has been a lot of talk about sexing it up so to say, it was even mentioned on here before. In most cases the subject is Miley Cyrus or Taylor Momsen and the impression is given that they are the only one who use their womanly assets. You know what? I don’t think that’s true.
There is no real way around it, Taylor and Miley don’t exactly wear a lot on stage. So yes, they are trying to be sexy. To what level and why they do it is something only they can truly answer, doesn’t mean we can’t make an eduction guess from observations. As it seems to me, Taylor Momsen is mainly trying to shock people, it’s not so much about being sexy but more about what will get people to criticize her more. That is what she seems to want and it’s working, people are talking about it.
Miley isn’t that way I think. Yes of course she’s also trying to be sexy but as I’ve stated before I think it’s more a case of her being a bit too confident about her body at times. I don’t think it is something that is actually thought out by image people, mainly because of her casual outfits. At the moment she is in Detroit and there are no paparazzi around, however when there are fan pictures around the internet she dresses exactly the same way as she does in Los Angeles. If it was all an image issue she wouldn’t need to be doing that there, so to me that theory is debunked.
Now lets focus on the people who are thought of as their opposites; Selena Gomez leading the way (just the most obvious and convenient example at the moment). People seem to think that she’s not trying to be sexy at all, others are even saying that she should try to be more sexy. Really? When someone wears strapless dresses that also happen to be rather short that’s not sexy? Of course it’s sexy but in a different way but saying that she’s not going for a sexy image is a lie if you ask me. Just ask David Letterman who was sneaking peeks at her cleavage.
Of course you don’t see her bra peeking out when she’s wearing low cut tops on other occasions, like we can always see Miley’s bra. Come to think of it, the choice in underwear is probably more of a factor there than the choice in tops (unless we’re speaking right out see through). When you look in the right places on the internet you will see that there are more than enough people who think Selena’s way of dressing is sexy. As far as performance outfits are concerned; Selena has yet to show what she will do once she starts touring. Who knows what she will come up with. So she’s not trying to be sexy? No, just in a less obvious way.
The thing about what people wear at events is that pretty much every teen star is wearing a short low cut dress and wearing high heels. No, it’s not the same as wearing next to nothing on stage but it’s a sexy style nonetheless. Just a style that has been fully integrated into red carpet culture so no one is going to have a problem with. On a red carpet it’s accepted that you see more leg and cleavage than fabric.
Being sexy is part of show business, that includes teen stars. How many bad looking people are there in Hollywood really? Fact is that the bulk of celebrities are good looking in one way or another. Sex sells and pretty much everyone is taking part in it but can you blame them? I think that if there were more girls in the world who look like these celebrities, more would be dressing that way and “making use of their body” so to say. There will always be people who use their body more than others, it has always been that way. Some people just get a bit too close to what is generally accepted by people.
No, I’m not trying to defend Taylor or Miley here, people can make their own judgment about whether what they dress age appropriately. However when people make that judgement they shouldn’t forget to keep a little perspective, there is more than one way of being sexy. People call other teen stars classy; classy perhaps but still proud of their bodies and going for a sexy look. If you ask me, people saying that Taylor and Miley are the only ones going sexy have it wrong. They are just the more obvious examples. Being sexy is just a part of Hollywood.
