The Twitter Problem

I can honestly say that I like Twitter, I use it quite a lot myself as can be seen on my personal Twitter page. Yes the site itself also has a Twitter but that’s only used if there is a new blog posting, so not that much going on. As with anything good, there are things about Twitter that I don’t like. Things that don’t affect me personally but that do annoy me.

There are a lot of young stars on Twitter, be it Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Miranda Cosgrove, Victoria Justice or Kay Panabaker. As with anyone, they use Twitter in their own way, One of the key aspects of celebrities on Twitter is that they can stay in contact with their fans, in a way the fans feel that they are getting closer to them. It however also limits their private life somewhat depending on what they tweet; that is under their own control.

Then there however is the dark side of Twitter, the tweets celebrities don’t have any control over. Miley Cyrus quit Twitter out of privacy reasons, that however doesn’t mean that Twitter quit her. Ever since she hit that delete button there is a group of people out there on a mission to find out where she is. Just to note, she’s not the only celebrity who has to deal with this. With her it just seems the most visible right now, mainly due to her popularity level.

Scenario: people see Miley out and about and happen to meet her, they will go “I JUST MET MILEY CYRUS AT insert location here” or something along those lines. Then all of these “fan” Twitters (and I use the term fan lightly) with thousands of followers retweet these messages. Consequence: she gets mobbed. We get things like what happened in New York recently where she spent most of the day in a hair salon. Hundreds of people were outside the salon waiting for her to come out and some people even try to pull on her clothing..
Realisation: Miley can’t even get a little space from her fans, meeting her is more important than letting her have a little space.

Scenario: Miley goes to Detroit to shoot a movie, she of course stays in a hotel. Someone finds out which hotel and spreads this all over Twitter.
Consequence: people start calling hotels, people stand outside her hotel waiting. She can’t even leave the hotel through the main entrance and probably can’t even walk her dog herself because she’d get mobbed.
Realisation: She can’t move freely in Detroit all that much because people keep bothering her. So most likely most of her downtime when shooting in Detroit is spent in her hotel (lucky for her there is also filming taking place in smaller towns).

Scenario: Miley goes to a bar with Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. A fan photographs her outside of the bar and tweets the picture, so “fan” Twitters spread this picture all over the internet.
Consequence: Gossip blogs and media cry outrage about Miley going to a club while she is underage. What they do not realize is that basing a story on the picture is that they don’t have all the information. In fact the bar was booked for the night for cast and crew for the film and their families.
Realisation: Miley can’t even go to a harmless party without people making a big deal out of it and once again creating false scandals and ones she can’t do anything about. She’s only out there doing what all of her co-workers do, she’s just the only one getting hounded for it.

So here is the thing, while they aren’t the original sources for these things; the “fan” twitters are largely to blame for all of this. If they wouldn’t be spreading all this stuff to their thousands of followers earlier scenarios would be far less likely to happen. Honestly, what use is it knowing where Miley is at every time of the day? There is none, all people do by spreading that is disrespecting Miley’s privacy and any celebrity who has to deal with that. I don’t care where she is at every time of the day, I respect her too much for that.

These “fan” twitters are only in it for some sickening desire for credit, as if spreading as much information about Miley makes them more important. Well they’re not, they’re making themselves look like inconsiderate, privacy invading idiots. If some of them end up reading this and are offended: good! I hope it makes you think about what you’re actually doing. Because in my eyes there is one thing they most certainly are not: fans. To call yourself a fan you have to be able to show respect and they are incapable of that.

P.S. It’s probably obvious that I refuse to follow these Twitter accounts.

Hi! I actually agree with every point you made in this post, and I’ll add another nuance, if you will…

Lately there have been claims from people who have met Miley that she has been “rude” or seemed “annoyed” when she met them. These “fans” don’t realize that, when they met her, she was probably trying to enjoy her free time with her family or friends, walking her dog, or going to a store. I wonder how these “fans” would feel if they were in Miley’s shoes… they’d get annoyed, too if they were stopped every 2 seconds while they were trying to relax or get something done. I don’t blame her. Besides, if she’s spending time with friends, chances are those friends want to spend time with her too, and not have to stop every 2 seconds because Miley is getting mobbed.

I get that it all “comes with being famous”, but I believe people should know their limits… both paparazzi and fans need to understand that she is a person, and that she needs own space to walk, and her own time to spend however she likes it… they don’t need to crowd her to the point where she can’t move without her security guards pushing people and photographers away…

So fans, please.. I understand that meeting Miley is awesome, but please give her space.
Just some thoughts…from a big Miley fan.
