Rising Starlets 2009

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

So I have this opinion on all sorts of lists that keep showing up around the internet. They are all pointless, who is best? That is something people usually make up for themselves, you can’t exactly be told who is best by some random person. That still is a personal opinion from that single person. Here I’m talking about all the blogs and sites that make random lists, usually not consulting any kind of vote though those are quite pointless as well. So what to do, those lists will keep showing up around the internet.

Simple enough solution, here is the annual list of rising starlets so now the 2009 edition. So young actresses and musicians in Hollywood who I feel have done the most improvement in their career rated by projects, popularity etc. Yes, it is full of my opinion so no one can tell me I’m wrong. Here we go. (more…)

Edition 35: Overnight sensation? Not really

Friday, December 14th, 2007

In a lot of cases with child actors people and the media call them overnight successes, that they did one thing and it made them successful right away. Even though that’s true in some cases like Natalie Portman who became a recognised actress overnight with the movie Léon it’s not true for a lot of other child actors.

It can be funny sometimes if you look at filmographies and it turns out that you’ve seen them in movies before without even realising it. I’m not counting tiny guest spots on TV shows right now; if I did that I could be going on forever seeing that’s pretty much how every actor gets started.

The first time I really had that was when I was looking at the filmography of Jena Malone. Granted, she’s not really a superstar but she still gets a fair amount of movies done. At some point I did check out her filmography because I didn’t really know her, turns out I have a on DVD with the woman; Contact in this case which she made when she was twelve years old. Her role in that movie is better known for a difficult special effect (It’s extensively mentioned in the extras; Jena is running towards a mirror but you can’t see the camera. In 1997 that was a lot more difficult than it would be these days.). She plays the younger version of Jodie Foster in the movie. (more…)

Edition 26: Sisters

Friday, October 5th, 2007

It’s quite common for siblings to be in the entertainment business. The same is true for the younger generation; people can probably notice that some people on starletlinks.com and starletviews.com share the same last name. This is of course because they’re sisters. Though it makes you wonder, who will have the bigger career in the end. So basically who is the most talented even though shear talent doesn’t always seem to be enough.

On starletlinks.com there are two main sister pares featured; Dakota and Elle Fanning are probably the best known ones right now. Dakota is four years older than Elle, that doesn’t really mean she works more though. While Dakota is in the spot light more than her little sister; Elle manages to pull of more movies a year than Dakota. Though I would have to add that a lot of the roles Elle does are smaller, supporting roles instead of starring roles. However she works with experienced actors like Denzel Washington and Brad Pitt, a perfect learning ground.

The fact that Dakota is in the spotlight more might help Elle in the end, she can stay in the background and slowly learn the trade. While Dakota might very well get stuck with the stigma of child star forever; Elle will probably have less of a problem with that. If I had to judge on pure talent I’m not certain actually, I have some movies with Elle and Dakota but not quite enough to form a definite opinion. Right now there isn’t that much of a difference between them I would say, though as I said I rate Elle’s chances in the long run higher. (more…)
