I don’t get Disney. Well, mainly I don’t get the Disney Channel. So yeah, I don’t work in the business or do I have inside sources, I’m only an outside observer. I’m a consumer though, I see what they do and what they release and I get an impression of the company through that. Impressions can be important for a company image and whether a company will be or will remain successful. Going by the programming of Disney Channel right now I actually think that their ratings can only go down right now.

Here is the thing, Hannah Montana as a show is winding down as everyone knows, the last season has been wrapped and now all that remains is to air the remaining episodes. That’s already the first problem, the fourth season of Hannah Montana only has something like fourteen episodes which will start airing in July. The last episode however won’t be aired until well into 2011, how does that work? Like always really, erratic airing schedules. Something that Disney does to all their shows but none as bad as Hannah Montana.

Hannah Montana has done a lot for Disney, it has made them a lot of money, got them a lot of viewers. So the show is something that should be treated with respect, let it end in a proper way. I don’t know what the season will be like but there is only one real way to end it properly, give the show a solid last run. Just get it over with and air the episodes in a nice steady pace, best even once a week. I know I’m not the only one who feels that way, a lot of people do. Disney however wants to milk the product as long as possible and will drag it on forever. That’s not how to keep viewers interested and that’s how you’re supposed to end a show that has done so much for you.

It’s not just the show itself though, it’s also the people on it. While Miley Cyrus had the respect to do another season, to give the show a proper ending, it doesn’t seem that Disney itself feels they have to. Since Hannah Montana stopped filming Miley has made it very clear that she’s leaving Hannah behind now and going on as herself. It’s not like Hannah Montana will be gone overnight once it stops airing new episodes, they will repeat them for who knows how many years to come.

Sure Disney has done a lot for Miley’s career but Miley has also done a lot for Disney. Shouldn’t that earn her some more respect and just let the show be over? I would even think that Miley’s growing up now could also hurt ratings for Hannah Montana. Looking at the movie roles Miley picks, they aren’t anything like Hannah Montana. Also in her music and performing she’s well over Hannah. So if the image of your main star and main show don’t fit anymore; for Disney it would also be the best thing to get the show over with.

I can see the same thing happening on other Disney shows as well, no doubt that once Wizards of Waverly place is done that they will drag the end of that as well. Though of course the role of Alex Russo is less iconic than Hannah Montana so it wouldn’t matter that much to Selena Gomez. The same goes for Sonny with a Chance, those shows aren’t over yet though. Also the strange scenario arises that Miley is leaving Disney while Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato are actually older but that’s a different subject.

The seeming lack of respect for their own product isn’t he only thing though, if I look at the new show Disney came up with, in an attempt to launch a new teen star. Good Luck Charlie is in my humble opinion just boring. It’s all just too sweet for a sitcom and it’s not funny. Disney has this way too safe thing going on anyway and with this new show they’ve taken it to a whole new level. It’s probably best proved by the cheer leading outfits they use on all their shows. Try to find me a single cheerleader in an average high school that covers up that much. It might seem like a weird example but when you watch a random Nickelodeon show in comparison you will get the point.

It’s not just the show Good Luck Charlie itself though, it’s also the people on the show. Now the main star is Bridget Mendler and to be completely honest, she lacks just a little bit of star power. It’s just like the whole show really, average. An average family, while you’d thing a sitcom would need a weird situation, Good Luck Charlie doesn’t really have that. Just a baby isn’t really enough a premise for a sitcom.

The baby is another thing I have issues with, by some people within Disney seemingly portrayed as the next big star. Mia Talerico is not even two years old yet, how can she be a star? Did anyone actually ask the girl if she wants to be a star? Oh hold on, there is a snag there, they couldn’t have asked her. Disney already has a bit of a name for using child stars for their own benefit, so pushing a baby as a star really won’t help them. I find it a rather risky thing to do anyway, the girl might lack talent. I don’t see the show lasting anyway, as far as I can tell the ratings don’t even come close to any of the other Disney Channel original scripted shows.

So what I’m trying to say with all of this is that Disney needs a reality check really. People won’t watch things just because they’re Disney, they should be listening to their fans and just end shows like Hannah Montana in a proper way. That’s besides needing shows that aren’t as safe as the current line ups, that’s just not what society is like. The Disney World might be ultra conservative in certain ways, the real world isn’t. From my perspective Disney needs more respect for its shows, its stars and its viewers.

Noticed something lately? Seems like there is a sort of new trend coming along, teen stars with tattoos. No, Miley Cyrus isn’t the only teen star with a tattoo, though I think she might be the only one with two of them. I’m not talking about Justin Bieber either seeing he just doesn’t belong on this site, despite people often saying that he sounds like a girl.

So without doing real research into it (I don’t see why I should find as many tattoos as possible), not even going to post pictures of them, if you want to see the tattoos go Google them. So yeah, Miley Cyrus probably has the best known examples with her “Just Breathe” tattoo on her ribcage. Of course people tried to turn that into a tittie tat as they called it but that it might have a deeper meaning didn’t really matter.

It is somewhat funny though, when Miley was discovered to have a tattoo there it was all how could her parents let her get that and how inappropriate the location was. Now that it turns out that Demi Lovato has a tattoo in a similar location (though I don’t know what it says) there seems to be nothing at all. Or maybe I just have a sharper eye than the generic gossip press. Miley and Demi are seventeen though, that Ali Lohan at sixteen has a tattoo on her back (same one as her older sister actually) is also far less of a scandal than I would expect.

Now here is the thing, you can’t get a tattoo until you’re eighteen years old unless you parental consent. So yeah, their parents are fine with it and those are the people who matter in that. So other people can’t tell them that they’re wrong to be getting those tattoos, only their parents have that right.

Now the way I personally feel about tattoos is that I’m fine with them. However what I’ll never understand is people who get them just because they’re cool, to me it makes more sense that if you put something on your body for the rest of your life, it should have a deeper meaning. While I don’t know why Ali and Demi got their tattoos, the meaning behind Miley’s tattoos is quite well known as she has explained them. The one on her ribcage is related to people she has lost to lung disease and the Love tattoo in her ear is to symbolize that she only lets love in her ear. So there is a meaning behind them and if she and her parents feel that she won’t regret them in the future, why shouldn’t she get it?

If people are all of a sudden afraid that tons of teenagers will be getting tattoos now that the likes of Miley and Demi have them, there is something wrong there. Tattoos should be as mentioned, personal. If someone gets a tattoo just because they’re a fan, they’re not really listening to their idol. In a sense doing the exact opposite of what the likes of Miley do, instead of emulating their idol they are going against them.

So yeah, celebrities don’t get tattoos at that age just because they’re cool, they wouldn’t be able to get away with it. That they still get crap for it just because they’re celebrities (well mainly Miley in this case) and they don’t bother to find out what it stands for first. Though I have no doubt that they know that they will get that, they still go ahead with, that would also show quite a strong feeling in getting them.l

Though it’s also amusing how the main press didn’t notice Miley’s ear tattoo until a couple of days ago, while it has been clearly visible since early May. So for once they’re actually giving something to write about and they don’t take it but go ahead with non-existing stories.

So what is the point of this blog? I don’t really know, seemed like a better idea at the time that I started writing it. I guess the main conclusion is that celebrities really aren’t going to get a tattoo at seventeen years old just because they think they’re cool. Isn’t being a celebrity already cool enough?

It’s in the media, around the internet, it’s everywhere. The constant debate of who is the bigger and better Disney star, is it Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez or Demi Lovato? Lets find out.

What can we compare them on? All three of them are active in the same segments of entertainment really, they each have their own Disney Channel show, they have a record deal with Hollywood Records and they do movies. So it should be quite easy to compare them on things, also included will be things like awards of course seeing that is everything the entertainment industry revolves around. We’ll even include some less obvious categories towards the end but we have to be thorough. Points will be awarded, 5 points for a victory, 3 points for a second place and 1 point for the last place. So lets start with the Disney Channel shows, Hannah Montana vs Wizards of Waverly Place vs Sonny With a Chance. Surprisingly when you put them all next to each other in ratings they aren’t actually that far apart. However, all ratings records are held by Hannah Montana and all stores are full of Hannah Montana merchandise and not of Wizards of Waverly Place and Sonny With a Chance merchandise. So Hannah Montana is the winner here, victory for Miley Cyrus. Second comes Selena and third Demi.

Next we get to the record deals, who is the best musician? The only thing that matters in that case is the number of albums they each sell. Miley and Demi have both been on #1 in the Billboard 200, Selena hasn’t even gotten close. So it’s between Miley and Demi, the thing however is that Demi has been on #1 once, Miley has been there five times. Miley’s albums also reached platinum status while Demi’s did not, so the victory goes to Miley Cyrus, Demi second and Selena third.

Movies, all three of them have done them. Lets just make this short, this is another victory for Miley Cyrus. She’s the only one of the three who has actually topped the box office, I will not count Horton Hears a Who for Selena since she might as well have not been in it. Selena however has been in movies that made it into movie theaters while Demi has only been in TV movies so far. So Selena is second and Demi third.

So now to the awards. Not really a point in making this part very long either, Miley has a closet full of surfboards and blimps while Demi and Selena only won a couple. Miley also has a Golden Globe nomination to her credit while that is something Selena and Demi can only dream of. So in this category it’s an easy order of another boring victory for Miley, second Selena and third Demi.

So that’s it for the purely professional comparisons, which results in a standing of Miley first with 20 points, Selena second with 10 points and Demi last with 6 points. So it’s pretty clear that Miley is by far the biggest star of the three success wise, that however isn’t everything that is to a person so we continue with some other things.

Lets start with charity, who’s the bigger philanthropist? Miley has raised millions for charity through her concert tours and also has her own charity. Selena might be an Unicef Ambassador but money wise you don’t really hear a lot from her. Who knows what Demi does for charity, can’t be bothered to find out. So it once again is Miley first, Selena second, Demi third.

The general biggest celebrity can easily be judged by the number of paparazzi pictures that is taken. That one is so easy it doesn’t even need clarification, here we look at the recent history, so the last couple of months. First Miley, second Demi, third Selena. We can also look at what big award shows people are invited to and then the order is almost the same but we just have to switch Demi and Selena.

The standing now is 30 points for Miley, 14 for Selena and 10 for Demi.

Now for the big one, which seems to be what is on the mind of most people. Who is the best role model? Lets look at all three of them individually for that just a little. Lets start with Miley. Miley has a tattoo, a whole array of piercings, she is involved in tons of scandals, even if they are created by the media they reflect badly on her. Her wardrobe choices also earn her a lot of criticism. Selena is a goody two shoes, she never says or does anything that becomes a major scandal, she always dresses appropriately doesn’t have any visual piercings and no tattoos. She can’t be caught in any scandalous outfits either. Demi is being accused lately of dressing too old and there have been some minor scandals. So I guess here for the first time we have an order of Selena first, Demi second and Miley third. Seeing Miley is such a horrible role model.

The end result however remains a land slide victory for Miley, 31 points vs Selena with 19 points and 13 for Demi. So now we once and for all know, Miley is the biggest Disney star.

If people haven’t started wondering by now who the hell wrote this, seeing it’s nothing like the usual blogs on this site; it’s written by the same person as always. I just did what everyone on the internet and in the media seems to do. They love to compare people, using all their own arguments for arguing why one person is better than another. Why? If you like Selena, go and like Selena. If you like Miley, go and like Miley. If you like Demi, go and like Demi. What is the point of trying to justify why you like one person more than another? There is none, it’s all a case of personal preference. So the first 850 words of this blog are completely meaningless, they are just there to prove a point. I don’t care who of the three has more success and I most certainly do not care about that role model bullshit, the concept of which as I’ve said before completely escapes me anyway.

In my eyes the people who try and justify their admiration for someone by putting down someone else are even worse. That’s what all this comparing comes down to and people will always find a reason to be right. So what if Miley for example won a big award, if she did she doesn’t deserve it and whoever gave her that award is pretty much nuts. If people just try to enjoy their favorite celebrity rather than be preoccupied by proving why they are the best to other people, life could be so much easier. Just like who you like and let someone else like who they like, it really isn’t that hard.

So I have this opinion on all sorts of lists that keep showing up around the internet. They are all pointless, who is best? That is something people usually make up for themselves, you can’t exactly be told who is best by some random person. That still is a personal opinion from that single person. Here I’m talking about all the blogs and sites that make random lists, usually not consulting any kind of vote though those are quite pointless as well. So what to do, those lists will keep showing up around the internet.

Simple enough solution, here is the annual list of rising starlets so now the 2009 edition. So young actresses and musicians in Hollywood who I feel have done the most improvement in their career rated by projects, popularity etc. Yes, it is full of my opinion so no one can tell me I’m wrong. Here we go.

10. Victoria Justice – Is getting quite a bit of attention for someone who isn’t on TV all that much. Sure she has her guest spots on Nickelodeon shows her and there and she did the TV movie Spectacular! She is getting an own show on Nickelodeon though for some reason it went a bit quiet around that.

9. Demi Lovato – Personally I think she should be up higher on the list, however I also think that she won’t get the same chances as other people might get. People see her too much as just another Disney star while I think she has more potential than that. This year saw the premiere of her show Sonny With a Chance which gets good ratings, however it doesn’t quite match up with other shows on the same channel. Her second album outsold her first album so that is going in the right direction, she’s developing her own sound.

8. Dakota Fanning – Dakota just had success with Twilight: New Moon of course though that isn’t really down to her. She however is continuing to show that she has some acting talent, the coming year however will be in the shade of Kristen Stewart a bit as she co-stars her twice, in both cases Kristen has the bigger role.

7. Selena Gomez – Continues to do well with Wizards of Waverly Place ratings wise, also has a movie coming out next year. Not too confident in her music career honestly but the main public seems to like her and the media makes her out to be bigger than she actually is. The media however is also of major influence in entertainment so that’s why she ranks higher than for example Demi Lovato.

6. Taylor Swift – Basically one of the best selling artists of the year if not the best selling one. For 2010 I however am not to sure, right now she is still milking the success of Fearless which was released in 2008. Even though it had a re-release with new songs she has to do something bigger fairly soon. Though she is now broadening her horizon into acting as well, so career wise that probably is a good thing.

5. Miranda Cosgrove – iCarly is pretty much the highest rated show in its age category, simple as that. She seems fairly settled at Nickelodeon though maybe just a bit too settled. She’s also recording an album, I hope it won’t be what she has been producing so far. So far she’s only been doing soundtrack work so I’m still hopeful that she can develop her own sound.

4. Jennette McCurdy – I’m probably the only person who ranks Jennette above Miranda in a comparison like this. She is also a major part in the success of iCarly, so in that part of the success I actually rank them equally. I however see more promise in her music career, unlike what most people would expect she didn’t sign to a pop label. She’s going into country music, with her voice I think she has potential there (if you haven’t heard her sing, just youtube her).

3. Kristen Stewart – Twilight, that’s what sums her up right now at the moment. Though she’s also doing The Runaways but I don’t think that will be that big a box office hit, don’t think it’s really supposed to be either. Twilight is also her problem though, right now she’s nothing but Twilight. Even I can see what it did to her name in Hollywood, despite me not actually liking Twilight.

2. Sofia Vassilieva – Visitors to this site (even though there aren’t that many) will know that I have a soft spot for her. In the past year however she has starred in a well received movie (My Sister’s Keeper) and not just because she shaved her head and eyebrows for it. Her show Medium also moved channels and what did that do? It only made ratings for the show either, quite an achievement for a show that has been on the air for that much time already. Is it due to her? Not in particular but she turns eighteen next year, which means producers for the show will be able to do what I think they have been wanting to do for a while. Give her a bigger role as she can start to work more hours. Only flaw I see is that she doesn’t really have any new movie projects lined up at this time.

1. Miley Cyrus – Yes, yet again I put Miley on the top. Why? Well, think about it. Who was the person with the most blown out of proportion scandals in the past year that weren’t actually true scandals? That’s right it was Miley. Did it hurt her career? If it did, I don’t want to know what would have happened if she didn’t have any of those scandals. We’d most likely be visiting churches devoted to Miley by now. She managed to crash Twitter (though there is no real proof for that, just rather curious Twitter crashed right after she deleted her Twitter) and expanded her career to include that of successful clothing designer. She however managed to do one major thing which is the most important; she managed to be Miley Cyrus. People keep saying she’ll have Hannah Montana branded on her forehead the rest of her life (though maybe that’s due to the show itself going down in quality), I think she already passed that point though. Next year will also see a movie in which she isn’t Hannah Montana and another album release. Nothing to suggest that she will go downhill, even if that is what certain media are trying to make people believe.

Demi Lovato released her second album this week titled Here We Go Again. First good news is that the Jonas Brothers influence is heavily reduced on this album. Nothing bad about the Jonas Brothers but Demi needs to find her own sound. With around 47 minutes this is an average length album and just proof that record companies have forgotten that a CD holds 80 minutes of music. Makes you especially wonder when a John Mayer song is left off the album and they stick the rather short Sonny With a Chance intro on there.

The name was already dropped; John Mayer, Demi didn’t do a half ass job of the album and worked with serious people. Which helps getting rid of the earlier mentioned Jonas sound. Her aim was that this album should become more Demi but do we truly know Demi after hearing this album? I don’t think so, in the past she has said that some of the music she writes wouldn’t have a place on a Disney label and that probably is still true. It’s still a commercial business and selling albums is still an aim of it all so that’s only logical. Like with the track Got Dynamite, you expect it to go into a far darker after hearing the beginning of the song. It has a far rougher sound than the other songs.

That is something that has to be said of the album, unlike some other artists you get the impression that actual music instruments were involved in the studio recordings. Though it seems to be becoming more and more common with younger artists. Demi’s singing doesn’t seem overproduced either but natural. While that wasn’t the case on her first album either there were some things about her singing on that. In certain cases the songs seemed too focused on doing as much voice exercises as possible, making it sound forced. I’m glad to say that this isn’t the case on Here We Go Again making it sound far more natural and relaxed.

So what songs stand out? For me two songs stand out in a negative way, the earlier mentioned So Far So Great which just shouldn’t be on there and Gift of a Friend. The last one isn’t a bad song, far from it but it just doesn’t fit on the album, it would be far better placed on a Disney soundtrack for some sort of fairy tale movie. That’s the vibe the song gives. Though it’s probably the song that illustrates best how little they did with her voice in editing. You don’t expect it from a label like Hollywood Records but apparently they understand that people don’t just want over-synthesized fake singers.

Now to the positive parts, the title track might seem like a logical choice but I’m not that fond of it and it turns out it’s one of the few songs where Demi had no writing involvement. It’s not a bad song, like none of the tracks are really but it doesn’t jump out either. If I had to pick the top songs of the album I would say Solo, Falling Over Me and World of Chances (the John Mayer track) which strangely enough all have a different sound. That is actually a positive aspect of the album, there is some variation on it. While everything can be classified as pop and pop rock there is still some variation in the music.

I’m also glad to report that while Demi is only sixteen years old she doesn’t feel the need to only sing about the problems of teenagers. Last year she claimed to not really have song writing skills, either she was lying or she is a quick study. Though there is only one song where she’s listed as the only writer, I have to admit that Catch Me isn’t the best track on the album though.

So how to rate the album? It is an improvement on the previous album, that is one thing that is certain. She shows clear development as an artist and is looking for a sound of her own. If I have to point out fault on the album is that there maybe are not quite enough songs that really stick out, songs where you think “wow”. Though that also might be a sign of the average quality of the song just being high. Besides the Sonny With a Chance intro there aren’t really songs on it where you rush to the skip button on your mp3 or CD player. So the final rating is four out of five. Now lets hope that Demi keeps up her evolution as a musician.
