This whole Disney star thing

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Selena Gomez just finished a big run of promotional activities for her movie Ramona and Beezus and through all of that something very annoying popped up again. While it seemed like the age old “Selena Gomez is replacing Miley Cyrus as a Disney star” was dying down a bit, it started up again. While I’ve said things about that in the past all those new statements about it made me think a bit.

It’s probably not a secret that I prefer Miley Cyrus over Selena Gomez. I won’t say that one is the better actor because I just haven’t seen enough of either of them to make that final judgment. Miley has done The Last Song yes and to me that shows that she has potential but that she also has a lot to learn. What I’ve seen of Selena’s acting is DVD and TV stuff and there she’s only really played the same character over and over again. Will have to see how she does in tougher roles.

Though I would have to add, if we ever get to see her in tougher roles. Right now Selena just seems a bit too safe in her career choices for my liking. That’s always been my main gripe with Selena anyway, it’s all a bit too sweet. Also when I look at her music, it’s all safe standard pop, there is no message behind the music. Can’t say that I take her music career that serious, also when I see her performing live there just seems to be this little bit of stage presence missing. That’s besides using backing tracks which to me is a no no for a singer, especially when you go on a nationwide talent show to perform. Which Selena did while performing on the America’s Got Talent results show, I actually expected the buzzers to go off at one point. (more…)

Edition 53: The Paparazzi Debate

Friday, August 1st, 2008

The city council of Los Angeles looking at how they can deal with the paparazzi in Hollywood. Their main concerns being the stars moving out of Hollywood or maybe even injuries due to paparazzi behavior. The LAPD nor the general public really see a point in changing the laws to deal with the paparazzi.

Something should be done about the paparazzi though, don’t get me wrong I think they do serve a purpose and should be able to do their jobs. People want pictures of celebrities and there should be a way to get them. There just should be a limit to what’s acceptable. Right now there are some celebrities that are being chased around town and are even limited in their movements.

Edition 46: Official websites; one year later

Friday, April 11th, 2008

About a year ago I wrote about how pitiful a lot of the official websites for the people linked on starletlinks.com are. So I took a look at the sites a year later and also looked at other ones; there is good news and bad news.

Lets start with the bad examples of last year, it’s always best to start with the bad news. LLrocks.com, Lindsay Lohan’s official site still hasn’t received a single update. A last update on the 27th February 2005 was bad enough last year now it’s even worse, I can’t even imagine how little they care about her web presence. Yes of course she has more important things to take care off, she has to try and rebuild her career but a good web presence could be a sign to people that she really is serious about it. Though the Lohan family doesn’t take the internet serious anyway, they’re trying to launch Aliana Lohan’s career but her site is probably even worse than Lindsay’s, no information there whatsoever.

abigailAnother site that hasn’t received a single update in the past year is Abigail Breslin’s site. Just like last year it still mentions that she’s nominated for an Academy Award, this time last year we already know she didn’t win it. Looking at the website of Sofia Vassilieva who’s now Abigails co-star in My Sister’s Keeper it’s even worse. Not a single update in about seven years on a website for a girl that’s just fifteen. So her site hasn’t been updated for pretty much half her life, not the mention the very old school internet background music on the site. They don’t have to be active on the internet themselves, that might cause more trouble than it’s worth. But they should remember that they have a fanbase that does go online, they care and don’t like things like this. A good web presence shows that a celebrity cares about their fans, of course it doesn’t mean that Sofa and Abigail don’t but it’s not that big an effort.

Edition 42: Privacy?

Friday, March 14th, 2008

A lot of things have been said about the privacy of celebrities, the main thing about it is that they simply have none. Which is a sad thing really but also something every celebrity knows before they go into the business. They know that paparazzi are always around and that every single thing they do is put under a microscope. However times do change, where it was possible for some celebrities to have a bit of a private life in the past those days seem to have completely passed.

I’m fully aware of the fact that sites like this one contribute to the lack of privacy, I won’t suggarcoat it, though I don’t see the point in reporting on their daily activities like some other sites do. The internet is what changed the privacy of celebrities considerably though, things are reported the very same day while in the past it went through the slower media outlets TV or even slower the tabloids. In the case of those media selections were made, things not deemed important enough were simply ignored. These days it doesn’t matter, even the small things are reported. I also think that the many websites on the internet have also caused a growth in the number of paparazzi looking for the next prize shot.

People will mainly think about people like Britney Spears and to a lesser extent Lindsay Lohan who are being followed around by an entire armada of paparazzi. I always thought it was a matter of supply and demand, the supply of Britney and Lindsay pictures must be enormous but still paparazzi get paid a lot for them. The pressure on them from the media is enormous, but you also shouldn’t forget that they didn’t have that much media pressure on them when they were younger.

Edition 41: The desire for faillure

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Running a site like this seems lonely at times……. 99% of websites about celebrities seem to be about one thing; wanting celebrities to fail. Of course I know there are fan sites but those are just focused on one person, plenty of their visitors want others to fail and enjoy bad news on competitors of their idols.

Honestly I don’t get it, why is it so hard to be positive once in a while? You don’t know what I’m talking about? Lets give some examples. Lets start with Lindsay Lohan; of course she has screwed up majorly in the past couple of years; there’s no way around that and it’s not something she herself would deny. Every single article about her that’s out there seems to be about when she’s going to relapse or when she screws up the next time. There are even plenty of sites out there that are pretty much praying that she relapses for some weird reason. Of course I don’t know if she’ll relapse or not, I have doubts about that myself at times.

Lindsay taking a sip of champagne is enough for all sites to call out and say that she’s relapsing, yet we haven’t seen her drink anything besides that sip of champagne. What surprises me most about that video is that Lindsay is a big deal while Hayden Panettieres under age brother is drinking champagne in the same video. If you cry outrage about one thing you would have to do the same for something like that.
