Like every year; here is the annual list of the young stars in Hollywood who I think have been doing a good job at building their careers. So a combination of past current success, mixed with things coming up in the future. A lot of it is my gut telling me things about how I feel about it, so I am biased. I don’t expect anyone to agree with me regarding this list but you know what? I don’t care, it’s my list so I stand by it. Though I have to admit; I had a hard time coming up with ten names. A lot of teen stars failed to impress this year and there isn’t that much new blood coming at the moment; seems like there is a bit of a gap between generations at the moment.

10. Selena Gomez – I can already hear people bitching about how she’s too low on this list but what has she really done this year? Besides getting her ass kissed by the media as the perfect role model? She had an under-performing movie out which didn’t exactly gave her the material to show off any acting talent. Wizards of Waverly Place has declining ratings and her album wasn’t a hit even though it got high praise (though I don’t know why). What has she coming up next year? One (pushed back) movie and the end of Wizards of Waverly Place. What will come after that? I don’t know but I hope it will be a bit more adventurous.

9. Emma Stone – An old newcomer on this list seeing she’s already 22 years old, got herself on the list for creating quite a hype around her movie Easy A. She also has a lot of movies coming up in the next two years so her place in Hollywood is set for a while, what worries me in this case is that there are a lot of comedies amongst them. Though maybe that’s the direction she wants to take so in that case it would be fine.

8. Taylor Momsen – This is a difficult one, her acting career is going downhill quite a bit due to her lacking appearances on Gossip Girl (not going to speculate as to why). However she is doing things to get herself noticed in the music industry, she actually does make decent music with The Pretty Reckless. It however is being overshadowed by her transformation within a year where she feels the need to shock people as much as possible to get herself noticed. I would prefer it if she let her music speak.

7. Dakota Fanning – In a way she’s still the go to teen actress in Hollywood, however she seems to have gone from quality actress more to blockbuster actress in a way, mainly due to the Twilight series. However she is also busy with going to normal high school so I can’t blame her for that, out of all the people on the list she’s the only one who became homecoming queen this year. After the Twilight movies it looks more promising again, so she’s still doing her thing in Hollywood.

6. Miranda Cosgrove – Miranda, just like a couple of others, is a bit safe. She doesn’t do any crazy things or things where you’d think that it would be a real challenge. The only thing she did which is a bit out of her comfort zone in a way is play a Disney star on The Good Wife for one episode. Her album did alright enough for a first effort though I don’t ever see her becoming a big seller, of course she doesn’t have to be. Her show iCarly is still going strong and she also had an animated movie that did well. Her future seems to be heading along the same lines as it is now.

5. Chloe Moretz – A lot of people would expect her to be higher up but I don’t see her as bit a hit as some other people. Yes, she did make an impact as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass. Thing is, no matter how much people talk about that movie it really wasn’t the success they make it out to be. She has a lot of movies coming out in the next two years and they seem like a fairly balanced mix between starring and non-starring roles. So she’s just taking her time.

4. Elle Fanning – Higher than her sister yes and she hasn’t actually done a whole lot in the past year so why is she there? For her it’s more about the next year, she actually has quite a few movies listed and just like with Chloe there is a nice mix between starring and non-starring and bigger and smaller movies. I just see more potential in Elle than in Chloe, I think she actually might be able to take advantage of being in the shadow of a more famous sibling. There doesn’t seem to be that much pressure on her.

3. Taylor Swift – I sort of had to put her up this high even though I don’t actually like it. Despite her lack in development in a way and her general safeness she still makes good music. Yes, she did make her acting debut this year and even though I don’t like saying it; she sucked as an actress. It really isn’t something she was made out to do it seems but it doesn’t seem to be what she really wants to do anyway. Not that she’s never going to act again but music is still her main focus. Despite me having certain issues with her, I still like her music and actually have concert tickets to go see her next year.

2. Victoria Justice – She is the star of Victorious obviously and does a good job of it. She has the looks to make it in Hollywood and she also has the voice for a music career. Whether a music career will be successful for her isn’t guaranteed but she’s working on it. Just like her network mate Miranda it seems she’ll just continue what she’s doing now, focus on her TV show, at this time there are no other acting projects listed. People in general just seem to like her which is a good thing and she’s not afraid to show some personality in interviews.

1. Miley Cyrus – Did I put Miley on #1 again? Yes, despite the (in my eyes unfair) criticism on her acting performance in her first real role outside of Hannah Montana, despite there being tons of non-existent blown out of proportion scandals, despite the “failing” of her music career and who knows what else. You know what? She’s still there, isn’t she? For all the criticism she gets she still is teen star #1 out there. So what is winning there, her talent or her “bad” image? She’s focusing on acting for the time being (though I’m sure music will be back soon enough) and the movies that are coming up are nothing what people in her position would have done in the past.

She chooses movies for strong female characters than just a paycheck. To me that shows that she’s serious about the acting craft and wants to learn and expand herself. Whether the movies will be a success or not is something we will have to wait and see about, just like we have to wait and see whether she can hold her own in those roles. Oh yes people, now that she’s 18 could you give her a little slack and stop it with the prejudice? There are also a lot of people who don’t think that she’ll make it because she’s “ugly”. The worldwide excitement regarding a false rumor about her posing in Playboy tells me otherwise.

So as you can tell for a rising starlets list it’s quite negative compared to previous years but that’s all I could think of. They’re each busy building a career their own way. As I said, if you don’t agree with it, tough luck. Start your own blog and make your own list.

P.S. Before anyone starts bitching about Willow Smith not being on this list, it takes more than one over-hyped song to get on it. As for the other group of people who are going to criticize me for not putting Bella Thorne on there; I just don’t see it.

I’m not usually the one to jump in on a single episode of a random show but I’m making an exception here. This week CBS aired an episode of The Good Wife, guest starring Miranda Cosgrove. Now that itself isn’t really a major event, people guest star on shows all the time however the nature of the episode to me was just wrong.

The premise of the episode is that the main character has to defend a former Disney Channel star who got into trouble. In this case with DUI’s and attempted murder by ramming someone’s car. That’s right, Disney Channel star, with the emphasis on Disney. As the company is referenced more than once in the episode. Now I’m not someone for conspiracies but isn’t it rather convenient that they have a Nickelodeon star portray a gone of the deep end Disney star? Especially when you consider that CBS is part of Viacom, Nickelodeon is part of MTV Networks which in itself is part of Viacom again. So in all reality, direct competition to Disney.

Couldn’t they have considered to just make the character a teen star instead of making it company specific? Why add Disney into the mix? Yes, there is this history that Disney stars have gone and screwed up. That doesn’t mean that Disney star is a synonym for screw up. That’s just the company aspect though, it actually gets personal.

Miranda’s character is bulimic, as mentioned as DUI’s and even has a lap dance video scandal on TMZ. Is it me or do the bulimia and DUI’s sound an awful lot like Lindsay Lohan? The lap dance video thing isn’t even close to being subtle, a beyond clear Miley Cyrus reference. Cultural references are normal but in this case it just reeks of badmouthing Disney. Probably a good thing that this episode was most likely written before Demi Lovato went into treatment, otherwise some references to her would probably have ended up in the episode.

The worst part to me however is how Miranda’s character actually says that her whole look and her partying is part of the “whole climbing out of the Disney ghetto thing”. So apparently Lindsay Lohan being in the rehab for the fifth time is an attempt at getting rid of her Disney image? Is it me or is that an actual insult to addicts? No one in this world would get three DUI’s and risk going to jail just for the sake of getting rid of an image. No one can convince me that they would anyway. The look thing is again something that Miley is being criticized for and again a rather cheap shot.

I don’t actually blame Miranda for doing it, most likely she was asked to do a guest spot on the Good Wife without knowing the details. It’s just a cheap trick by CBS to use someone who has a good girl image from the ranks of their own company. It doesn’t exactly put Miranda in a good light while I doubt that she really had anything to do with it.

I hope that Disney themselves won’t pay attention to this by putting something into an ABC show, though it wouldn’t surprise me. CBS really isn’t doing their parent company any favors when they try to badmouth the competition through their TV shows. It just makes CBS look bad. I’m pretty sure people are going to say that I’m making too big a deal out of this but I disagree. It’s just using culture references as slander. While most people aren’t going to look for the obvious things in an episode like that, they will think: lap dance? Didn’t that Miley Cyrus once do that? DUI? How many did Lindsay Lohan have again?

People are going to read into stuff like that and it reflects badly on Disney stars. As if they don’t have to deal with unfair judgment as it is already. “It’s just an act, I’m not a bad girl” is basically saying that people like Miley and Lindsay are bad girls. That is how the media has always portrayed them without looking at the real background. Yes Lindsay has screwed up big time, I’m not going to defend that but with Miley? I still maintain that she hasn’t actually done anything bad (yet, you never know what the future holds).

So yeah, cheap shots by CBS towards Disney. Grow up.

This was announced long ago but now the time has come that Miranda Cosgrove released her first album Sparks Fly. There are two versions of the album, a standard version and a deluxe version. Here we’re going to focus on the standard version. The standard contains eight songs, the deluxe thirteen. Quite a big difference but I figure that they would have put the best stuff on the standard version so that’s why we’re focusing on it.

With eight songs the album is rather short, with not even half an hour of music. That’s more down to what’s normal these days though, music labels still seem to forgot that you can fit eighty minutes of music onto a CD. Then again, filling a CD with filler tracks isn’t really a good thing either.

Having listened to the album I sort of have mixed feelings about it. To go right to the fact; Miranda is an actress first and a singer second, that isn’t a secret. So her writing involvement on this album is limited to the first track and single Kissin’ U which she co-wrote. Some more well known names were involved in writing songs for it though, like Ke$ha (Disgusting) and Avril Lavigne (Daydream).

It’s a bit an up and down album for me, as mentioned it starts with Kissin’ U which is an alright song then however we move on to BAM which just doesn’t work for me. Then it moves right up again with Disgusting which doesn’t hide that it has Ke$ha DNA in it, at times the Autotuning might be overdone though. Autotune for effects in this case, for the rest Miranda actually sounds very natural. Can’t say that I’ve ever seen a live performances of her but it seems does she indeed can sing.

So what are the best tracks? I’d say Disgusting, Shakespeare and There Will be Tears. The not so good tracks? I’d say BAM, Oh Oh and Hey You. Hey You is just a bit too much of a stereotypical baled with nothing special to it.

This is a first attempt by Miranda as recording artist and she did quite alright. It still lacks a little bit of identity but that isn’t anything shocking for a sixteen year old, especially when they’re main trade is actress rather than recording artist. So I’m in doubt for the score, it’s somewhere inbetween 2/5 and 3/5. Looking at the fact that it’s Miranda’s first attempt I’ll give her a 3/5. While it all isn’t anything special it’s still enjoyable enough to listen to.

So I have this opinion on all sorts of lists that keep showing up around the internet. They are all pointless, who is best? That is something people usually make up for themselves, you can’t exactly be told who is best by some random person. That still is a personal opinion from that single person. Here I’m talking about all the blogs and sites that make random lists, usually not consulting any kind of vote though those are quite pointless as well. So what to do, those lists will keep showing up around the internet.

Simple enough solution, here is the annual list of rising starlets so now the 2009 edition. So young actresses and musicians in Hollywood who I feel have done the most improvement in their career rated by projects, popularity etc. Yes, it is full of my opinion so no one can tell me I’m wrong. Here we go.

10. Victoria Justice – Is getting quite a bit of attention for someone who isn’t on TV all that much. Sure she has her guest spots on Nickelodeon shows her and there and she did the TV movie Spectacular! She is getting an own show on Nickelodeon though for some reason it went a bit quiet around that.

9. Demi Lovato – Personally I think she should be up higher on the list, however I also think that she won’t get the same chances as other people might get. People see her too much as just another Disney star while I think she has more potential than that. This year saw the premiere of her show Sonny With a Chance which gets good ratings, however it doesn’t quite match up with other shows on the same channel. Her second album outsold her first album so that is going in the right direction, she’s developing her own sound.

8. Dakota Fanning – Dakota just had success with Twilight: New Moon of course though that isn’t really down to her. She however is continuing to show that she has some acting talent, the coming year however will be in the shade of Kristen Stewart a bit as she co-stars her twice, in both cases Kristen has the bigger role.

7. Selena Gomez – Continues to do well with Wizards of Waverly Place ratings wise, also has a movie coming out next year. Not too confident in her music career honestly but the main public seems to like her and the media makes her out to be bigger than she actually is. The media however is also of major influence in entertainment so that’s why she ranks higher than for example Demi Lovato.

6. Taylor Swift – Basically one of the best selling artists of the year if not the best selling one. For 2010 I however am not to sure, right now she is still milking the success of Fearless which was released in 2008. Even though it had a re-release with new songs she has to do something bigger fairly soon. Though she is now broadening her horizon into acting as well, so career wise that probably is a good thing.

5. Miranda Cosgrove – iCarly is pretty much the highest rated show in its age category, simple as that. She seems fairly settled at Nickelodeon though maybe just a bit too settled. She’s also recording an album, I hope it won’t be what she has been producing so far. So far she’s only been doing soundtrack work so I’m still hopeful that she can develop her own sound.

4. Jennette McCurdy – I’m probably the only person who ranks Jennette above Miranda in a comparison like this. She is also a major part in the success of iCarly, so in that part of the success I actually rank them equally. I however see more promise in her music career, unlike what most people would expect she didn’t sign to a pop label. She’s going into country music, with her voice I think she has potential there (if you haven’t heard her sing, just youtube her).

3. Kristen Stewart – Twilight, that’s what sums her up right now at the moment. Though she’s also doing The Runaways but I don’t think that will be that big a box office hit, don’t think it’s really supposed to be either. Twilight is also her problem though, right now she’s nothing but Twilight. Even I can see what it did to her name in Hollywood, despite me not actually liking Twilight.

2. Sofia Vassilieva – Visitors to this site (even though there aren’t that many) will know that I have a soft spot for her. In the past year however she has starred in a well received movie (My Sister’s Keeper) and not just because she shaved her head and eyebrows for it. Her show Medium also moved channels and what did that do? It only made ratings for the show either, quite an achievement for a show that has been on the air for that much time already. Is it due to her? Not in particular but she turns eighteen next year, which means producers for the show will be able to do what I think they have been wanting to do for a while. Give her a bigger role as she can start to work more hours. Only flaw I see is that she doesn’t really have any new movie projects lined up at this time.

1. Miley Cyrus – Yes, yet again I put Miley on the top. Why? Well, think about it. Who was the person with the most blown out of proportion scandals in the past year that weren’t actually true scandals? That’s right it was Miley. Did it hurt her career? If it did, I don’t want to know what would have happened if she didn’t have any of those scandals. We’d most likely be visiting churches devoted to Miley by now. She managed to crash Twitter (though there is no real proof for that, just rather curious Twitter crashed right after she deleted her Twitter) and expanded her career to include that of successful clothing designer. She however managed to do one major thing which is the most important; she managed to be Miley Cyrus. People keep saying she’ll have Hannah Montana branded on her forehead the rest of her life (though maybe that’s due to the show itself going down in quality), I think she already passed that point though. Next year will also see a movie in which she isn’t Hannah Montana and another album release. Nothing to suggest that she will go downhill, even if that is what certain media are trying to make people believe.

I can honestly say that I’m getting sick of these double standards in the world of entertainment, especially regarding young celebrities. Now I’m not in the business of attacking someone just to prove a point regarding someone else. So this shouldn’t be seen as an attack (because it isn’t) but just to illustrate a double standard.

We all know by now that Miley Cyrus is the favorite “bad girl” of almost every celebrity gossip site or blog. Anyone who has ever seen this site knows that I have a soft spot for her, that however doesn’t change that I can be objective if I have to be. Especially seeing I don’t actually hate any celebrity, I might be less fond of others but when you don’t like someone, you don’t have to watch their movies, tv shows or listen to their music.

So Miley Cyrus has ten piercings and a tattoo, the horror. Last time I checked that isn’t illegal even though some gossip bloggers maintain that it is; it’s called parental consent. That apparently makes her a bad girl, that she keeps staying humble and that everyone who works with her seems to love her, doesn’t seem to matter. Yes there are a lot of paparazzi pictures of her but is she ever actually doing something bad in them? Not exactly, you can’t find her at a nightclub in the middle of the night. The one story TMZ posted that she was refused at a night club was already proven as being false by the night club owners. Would be a bit of a suicide for a business to be known for breaking a customer’s privacy (even though she wasn’t actually a customer).

The story is picked up by multiple gossip media and people are upset about how a girl that young keeps partying all the time. Thing is…… there is no proof that she does, it’s nothing but hearsay. With a good chance that the hearsay was completely fabricated, I can write anything on here if I just add “a source told me” but I won’t. If there is proof of anything it is of the polar opposite; that she doesn’t. Now to mention other people to illustrate the double standard. Selena Gomez was seen a couple of days ago leaving a night club, she was photographed by paparazzi. What she was doing there? I have no idea, don’t actually care either. There are plenty of clubs that have performances and things like that, so things that don’t actually involve the clubbing part. It’s not like she had to be carried out because she was drunk.

Selena however has been branded by the gossip media as a good girl, the opposite of Miley. Someone who can’t actually do anything wrong. Another fellow good girl of hers is in the same situation. Miranda Cosgrove is seen as very innocent and the anti-Miley. Fine with me, I don’t have anything against the girl. Yet again of her there are also pictures of her leaving night clubs, again most likely for performances but still. You don’t hear anything making a big drama about that. So for Miley to create drama it’s enough that there is some vague rumor that she was refused at a club, while Selena and Miranda can come out of a nightclub without it being a drama.

People will say that they weren’t there to party, which I actually do believe. However those same people have no clue what Miley would be doing at a club. Just because it’s Miley they are simply to believe everything. There could be even more extreme examples I could name but that would border on attacking someone else and I won’t be doing that. Then again….. I actually am attacking other people. I’m attacking those hypocritical assholes like Perez Hilton and Harvey Levin who dare call themselves journalists. They have their own agendas to only serve themselves.

These “people” (I use the term lightly here) feel they can get away with it, it doesn’t hurt them personally doesn’t it? That they are going after a teenage girl who can defend herself all she wants, some people still won’t believe it. Simply because she has been branded by these idiots as a bad girl. It’s a good thing that the industry doesn’t seem to see her that way, even though they would just love to see her fail. Where does this desire for failure come from anyway? Regarding any celebrity actually, just because they are famous they aren’t allowed to have success?

Yes I do talk about celebrities on here as well but at least I see them as human beings. With me there also isn’t a double standard, yes I favor certain celebrities above others. I however will never interpret a picture a different way, just to serve my own agenda. It’s just sad that it’s very normal to do just that these days. From my observations Miley is not a bad girl, as someone who has followed quite a few celebrities growing up over the years. There is nothing in her life that could make me believe that she will become the trainwreck everyone wants her to be. No I don’t see it in Miranda and Selena either, if I see it in anyone I won’t write about it here right now. If tattoos and piercings make someone a trainwreck; there are a lot of celebrities out there with those. I’d actually have a hard time thinking of anyone who doesn’t. They however aren’t Miley so it simply doesn’t matter.

This concludes my rant for now.
