Edition 46: Official websites; one year later

Friday, April 11th, 2008

About a year ago I wrote about how pitiful a lot of the official websites for the people linked on starletlinks.com are. So I took a look at the sites a year later and also looked at other ones; there is good news and bad news.

Lets start with the bad examples of last year, it’s always best to start with the bad news. LLrocks.com, Lindsay Lohan’s official site still hasn’t received a single update. A last update on the 27th February 2005 was bad enough last year now it’s even worse, I can’t even imagine how little they care about her web presence. Yes of course she has more important things to take care off, she has to try and rebuild her career but a good web presence could be a sign to people that she really is serious about it. Though the Lohan family doesn’t take the internet serious anyway, they’re trying to launch Aliana Lohan’s career but her site is probably even worse than Lindsay’s, no information there whatsoever.

abigailAnother site that hasn’t received a single update in the past year is Abigail Breslin’s site. Just like last year it still mentions that she’s nominated for an Academy Award, this time last year we already know she didn’t win it. Looking at the website of Sofia Vassilieva who’s now Abigails co-star in My Sister’s Keeper it’s even worse. Not a single update in about seven years on a website for a girl that’s just fifteen. So her site hasn’t been updated for pretty much half her life, not the mention the very old school internet background music on the site. They don’t have to be active on the internet themselves, that might cause more trouble than it’s worth. But they should remember that they have a fanbase that does go online, they care and don’t like things like this. A good web presence shows that a celebrity cares about their fans, of course it doesn’t mean that Sofa and Abigail don’t but it’s not that big an effort.

Edition 39: The Strike

Friday, February 8th, 2008

The WGA (Writers Guild of America) strike seems to be coming to an end now (it all seems to depend on a WGA meeting tomorrow), or who knows; once you read this it might be already over. But what kind of damage has it actually caused? Three months of strike don’t really go without consequence. We hear daily reports on how much money the movie industry has already lost this year.

I have to make clear that I support the writers (I’m trying to be one myself so I have to really), though I also understand the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers). The main point of argument is the compensation for online content, so when they’ve made a TV show or movie and it’s also streamed on the internet. Of course the writers want to be paid for this but no one knows how the internet market will develop.

It’s a time where developments go really quickly, you can’t actually know how much money the internet content will make over the years. So it’s understandable that the studios were very hesitant, though pretty much paying them nothing at all is a bad idea when going into talks. At some times the strike got a bit silly though, there were some AMPTP and WGA mud slinging matches. (more…)

Edition 37: Sofia Vassilieva

Friday, January 25th, 2008

NUP_103553_1016With the writers strike still going on there’s not that much news in general or a lot of development in the entertainment industry in general. So lets try something a little bit different; there’s simply more news on certain people so they automatically get more attention than others. That’s why we’re going to focus on some of the lesser known starlets once in a while. We’re not just keeping track of the careers of the big names but also of the smaller ones. Small names can become big names in time.

Lets start of with Sofia Vassilieva for this week, it took me some time to learn to spell that name right it’s not the most common name out there. A lot of people probably don’t even know who she is. During Christmas she’s mostly known for Eloise, seeing that’s when the networks usually air the Eloise movies. Since then however she’s mostly known as Ariel Dubois on the NBC show Medium.

I’m a very big sceptic of the supernatural but I still enjoy watching the show. The show started it’s fourth season a couple of weeks ago and it seems the writers felt it was time for a change. The character of Ariel Dubois was a side character for the first three seasons with a more starring role once in a while. This season however there seems to be a change, in the first two episodes of the season the focus seems to have moved a lot into Ariel’s direction. (more…)

Edition 24: The Dumb Girls in Hollywood

Friday, September 21st, 2007

All girls in Hollywood are dumb and shallow. Sometimes it seems that way when you read the magazines and the celebrity news and gossip sites. The Lindsay Lohan’s and Britney Spears make it look like that but that’s only because they’re the ones that get all the media attention. There are girls out there that prove the opposite.

I’m not saying that people like Lindsay Lohan are dumb, I’ve never seen their school report cards; they just made the wrong choices. To the general audience they just seem that way also because you never know what is true and what isn’t. Most of the girls in Hollywood finish high school say that they want to go to college but don’t in the end. This is understandable looking at the busy schedules they have and that theire jobs usually pay well so there isn’t a need for a college degree in that department.

There are quite a few girls out there that are serious about an education though. Natalie Portman for example, she has a college degree in psychology from Harvard. She has even indicated that she would leave acting at some point and work as a psychologist, though I have my doubts that that would work. I don’t know if a lot of people would be willing to go to a psychologist who’s famous. Not to mention it’s quite hard to keep up with the latest development in a field of health care when you aren’t active in it. (more…)
