The role model; a person that is admired by young people and how they are trying to emulate. That’s more or less the definition of the term but to be completely honest; it’s all bullshit and the term shouldn’t be allowed to be used in that way, I don’t mean for the sake of the kid’s that admire them but also for the sake of the celebrities themselves. Role Models
Tuesday, December 28th, 2010Image is Everything
Sunday, December 19th, 2010When you read any sort of thing about young stars these days, there is this one thing that always keeps coming back. The ever so important image, the idea that stars create a certain persona around themselves to attract a certain portion of society to themselves. The problem I however see is that the assumption is made that everyone does it, that for every celebrity there is a well thought out plan as to how develop this image. So as to how they are seen by other people.
I don’t believe that that is the case. As far as I see it, there are three sorts of people. People who seem to care too much about their image, people who do what feels right but still think about it and there are those who just don’t care about it at all. To illustrate what I mean I’m going to use three examples. For the first group Selena Gomez, for the second Miley Cyrus and for the third Taylor Momsen. Why those three? Mainly because the media likes to report on them the most, though they generally put Taylor in the same category as Miley which I don’t agree with. Some of them even turn it into an image competition.
It shows in everything really, let’s start with the kind of interviews they do for example. Selena is rarely caught on any even remotely questionable opinion, everything she says is just safe. Which as such isn’t a bad thing but it makes her just seem a bit distant, not very emotional, no real passion about something. You always get the impression that she thinks about every word she says and there better not be anything bad. (more…)
Rising Starlets 2010
Sunday, November 28th, 2010Like every year; here is the annual list of the young stars in Hollywood who I think have been doing a good job at building their careers. So a combination of past current success, mixed with things coming up in the future. A lot of it is my gut telling me things about how I feel about it, so I am biased. I don’t expect anyone to agree with me regarding this list but you know what? I don’t care, it’s my list so I stand by it. Though I have to admit; I had a hard time coming up with ten names. A lot of teen stars failed to impress this year and there isn’t that much new blood coming at the moment; seems like there is a bit of a gap between generations at the moment. (more…)
Review: Light Me Up
Saturday, August 28th, 2010
This review can be kept quite short, a little over two months ago The Pretty Reckless released their EP and now the album Light Me Up is out. Usually you’d expect a little more time between EP an album but I don’t work in the release department of Interscope so I don’t know. Not that it’s much more than the EP, with ten songs and barely 34 minutes of play time it fits the trend of ever shorter albums.
One of the songs of the EP didn’t make it to the album but seven others were added. As for the themes of the album, they’re more of the same though that isn’t really surprising, the EP really should be seen as a preview of the album. So for the most part I’m going to refer back to the earlier review for that aspect.
So what are the best songs on there? I’d say Miss Nothing, Just Tonight and strangely enough the slower Nothing Left to Lose. Despite my reservations certain content in those songs. They’re just pleasant to listen to, mainly the last two. One thing I have to point out though is that I’m never that impressed with Taylor’s vocals, I’d call them sufficient and well suited for the music but she’ll never stand out as a vocalist. (more…)
Sexing it Up
Saturday, August 7th, 2010Lately there has been a lot of talk about sexing it up so to say, it was even mentioned on here before. In most cases the subject is Miley Cyrus or Taylor Momsen and the impression is given that they are the only one who use their womanly assets. You know what? I don’t think that’s true.
There is no real way around it, Taylor and Miley don’t exactly wear a lot on stage. So yes, they are trying to be sexy. To what level and why they do it is something only they can truly answer, doesn’t mean we can’t make an eduction guess from observations. As it seems to me, Taylor Momsen is mainly trying to shock people, it’s not so much about being sexy but more about what will get people to criticize her more. That is what she seems to want and it’s working, people are talking about it.
Miley isn’t that way I think. Yes of course she’s also trying to be sexy but as I’ve stated before I think it’s more a case of her being a bit too confident about her body at times. I don’t think it is something that is actually thought out by image people, mainly because of her casual outfits. At the moment she is in Detroit and there are no paparazzi around, however when there are fan pictures around the internet she dresses exactly the same way as she does in Los Angeles. If it was all an image issue she wouldn’t need to be doing that there, so to me that theory is debunked. (more…)
